| Abstract electronic piece which uses an "ethnic" African hand-made xylophone (or to be more accurate, a balaphon) as source material. Mysterious and contemplative and even slightly eerie, it explores various distortions of the original sound of the instrument which has been pulled apart and recombined with itself in various ways. At certain well-spaced intervals in the electronic collage I have allowed the raw unprocessed sound of the instrument to shine through - which it does to great effect I think. It "surprises" the ear to hear such a stark acoustic tone with its natural room-sized ambience suddenly ring out amidst the unnatural electronic swirlings all around it. On a good hi-fi it almost sounds as if somebody is playing it right in front of you. Free download available on Megaupload. |
