Play Size Mins Quarter Tone Sonata op.58
3:40 This is the first movement of a quarter-tone piano sonata I am currently working on. It starts off tonally (if not necessarily melodically) with a quirky tune in a strong 4/4 rhythm. The quarter-tones are introduced gradually in this movement, until by the end all 24 notes of the scale are used equally.

The second movement will use quarter tones in a totally different fashion. I have devised an eight-note whole tone scale using every third quarter-tone of the 24 available notes in the microtonal octave. (A "normal" whole tone scale has only six notes, and a "normal" harmonic scale has only seven, the eighth note being the octave. My scale has eight equally separated notes; the ninth being the octave!)

There are subsequently three of these whole-tone scales that can be utilised in this manner (8 x 3 = 24), allowing for the possibility of a completely new system of music. (Still with me?) I am still experimenting with this system, and will upload the results when I am satisfied that I have something of interest.
