Concrète Mix
No synths here - just household sounds mixed and processed into an aural potpourri in the style of John Cage. The sounds get more complex as the piece develops, adding layer upon layer of processing.
When I made this piece I was listening to a great deal of 1960's electronic and concrète music, especially the works of Ilhan Mimaroglu. His Tombeau d'Edgar Poe, Bowery Bum and Agony in particular impressed me. It was a few years afterwards that I came across John Cage's Fontana Mix and discovered that it bore a striking resemblance to my piece! In 1983 I had very little in the way of sound processing equipment - in fact most of it was done using cheap cassette recorders. So I was quite surprised to discover that I had created a sound-world that quite closely matched something done by one of the "masters" of the genre. Get hold of a copy of Fontana Mix if you can, and compare it for yourself!
