Take 3 for electric guitars / Foundation and Empire
Opus: 16a & 16b
Length: 9:25 / 18:00
Instruments: electric guitars, electronic percussion, electronic feedback effects
Composed: 1980
Revised: 2009
A "fuzz guitar" excursion a la Hendrix, albeit far less frenetic. If you listen to the bass you might notice that everything is laid out in groups of three, or three lots of three etc.
I revisited this piece in July 2009, re-recording it and adding electronic effects to make a new 18 minute work which I've called "Foundation and Empire", based on the excellent SF novel of the same name by Isaac Asimov (and a little bit on the music of Klaus Schulze). The main rhythmic section represents Asimov's Empire; the gradually increasing electronic chaos is the fall of Trantor, and the final few bars represent Hari Seldon's First Foundation (and may lead to a second piece in the future if I feel up to the task).
Free download of both pieces available as a zip file on MegaUpload, or you can download the whole Guitars (Mostly) album from MegaUpload. And here's the 14 minute MIDI version which was used as the basis for the new piece.
