FOR THE YEAR 2000 - Reviews (Compiled from LYRIQ - Mensa Poetry Magazine)

"Elwood HerringElwood Herring' 'For the Year 2000' would be quite powerful, but for a few weak rhymes (rime riche, I think it's called, when a word rhymes with itself) and the constant drumming metre a bit monotonous and mesmeric, though I do realize Elwood's intention to create anticipation and a sense of anxeity; I still think the occasional deviation is good for highlighting and shift of emphasis.   (A. Brett)

This one certainly made me sit back and think. Elwood covered every prospect. I hope he's no Nostradamus.   (B. Sefton)

Certainly a very topical subject. This is crammed with ideas and obviously a lot of time and ideas have gone into its compilation. I wish I had the patience to turn out poetical works of this length. There is a lot of fine and interesting rhyming in it, too.   (B. Bovington)

This is very cleverly put together, both in content and structure. Thought-provoking and - unfortunately - very realistic.   (L. Richardson)

Cheery little poem Elwood. I liked the lay-out, though if reading aloud, the months sounded like an elongated reversal of "Space Oddity," by David Bowie. By the time I reached December I was glad of the change in format; building up to a big finish, or so I thought, only to be let down by a carbon copy (almost) of "In the Year 2525," by Zager and Evans   (J. Mann)

Humourous, interesting and well constructed. A great deal of thought was put into this. Let's hope the last stanza of December hasn't occurred in 1999.   (J. Brett)

A slightly jaundiced view, perhaps, but it the many elements of truth throughout which strike a note of alarm! The pitch and steady meter suggest this could well become a ballad for the year 2000 - a requiem of times past and days to come.   (T. Wren)

Oh, yes indeed! All our fears neatly expressed.   (P. Pederson)
